Seminar Series

Famed Wimberley artist Buck Winn is subject of WIC seminar

Buck Winn, who achieved national prominence in the fields of art, architecture, sculpture, and structural innovation over a span of some 40 years, will be the subject of the 2nd of a series of Wimberley Institute of Cultures seminars Monday, July 14, 2008.

Presenting the profile of Winn will be family friend Pete Anderson, who in addition to being a long-term admirer, has also chaired WIC's efforts to preserve and exhibit some of his best-known art works.

A retired Air Force and Delta Airlines Pilot, Anderson first met Winn through his wife Rita, who was a schoolmate of Winn's daughter and current WIC president Tinka Eoff.  Sharing strong interests in aviation and the arts, Buck and Pete enjoyed a friendship which lasted until Winn's death in 1979.

Holding a segment of Buck Winn's preliminary sketch of a massive
"History of Ranching" mural is Wimberley's
Pete Anderson, who will profile the noted artist-architect-inventor in a WIC seminar July 14th at the Winters-Wimberley House.  The full-size mural spanned 280-ft, portions of which have been restored and exhibited in Wimberley under the guidance of Anderson and his WIC committee.

"It's because of his many accomplishments in a variety of fields," says Anderson," that Buck's artistry almost knew no boundaries."

Born James Buchanan Winn in Celina, Texas, in 1905,  he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and continued his studies in art and architecture at the Academie Julian in Paris. He and his wife, Catherine (Kitty) came to Wimberley in 1940 and settled on a ranch bordering the Blanco River.  Many of his projects were launched there from his studio, barn and grounds.

In addition to creating many "bigger than life" sculptures and murals for notable public and commercial structures, which Anderson will highlight, Winn also pioneered in use of lightweight building materials which he applied to numerous structural innovations.

The Buck Winn seminar will begin at 7 p.m. in the historic Winters-Wimberley House, located at the entrance to the Community Center (River Rd at Ranch Rd. 12). Admission is $10 and will include refreshments.  Reservations may be made by contacting Pat Hector at 847-3979 or nphector@verizon.net .
