4TH GRADE PROGRAM

As part of the 4th grade Texas social studies curriculum, students learn about their own local community history. To support this initiative, WIC provides an immersive field trip for our local students by inviting them to tour various historic sites, including the Winters-Wimberley House, which is now a museum open to the public. Each spring WIC docents tell the story of the early days of Wimberley and its pioneer families, thereby providing a view and narrative of the ways of life and events that shaped our Wimberley community.

One of the historical figures introduced to the 4th graders in period costume is a local actor portraying William C. Winters, an early founder of Wimberley. The students get to hear the story in the first person of his participation in the Battle of San Jacinto and his wounds resulting from it. He tells of becoming a grain miller in Winters Mill and makes the children aware that he actually built the stone portion of the 1857 house they’re standing in — known as the Winters-Wimberley House (now the Wimberley Valley Museum). The Texas Historical Commission marker of this important community site is located in front of the house for all to see.
